A Look At Some Winter Running Tips

By Arthur Andrews

There are many ways to have a better winter running experience. If you are an avid runner, then you probably are not going to stop just because the weather is getting cooler. There are a few great winter running tips that can help you to more effectively and safely run during the winter months.

Protection is the rule of thumb when it comes to running in cold weather. Anyone attempting to run in the winter must protect their bodies when doing so. Extremities such as hands and feet should always be kept warm and dry. Winter running calls for thicker socks and gloves. Other good choices are ear muffs and toboggans.

It is also important to keep in mind that you are doing a physical exercise. It can be possible to become overheated if too many articles of clothing are used to keep you warm. Over heating is an invisible enemy to the runner in the colder months of the year. Many don't realize that is even possible to become overheated in the cold weather.

Always stay hydrated when working out, whether it is in the winter or in hotter weather. The muscles and organs still need water to operate properly. Drinking water is one of the best things you can do for your body.

Another helpful tip is to be aware of your breathing when you are running. When you breathe out of your mouth and in through your nose, it will help keep sore throats at bay. A runner can easily catch a cold when they are breathing through their mouth, letting the cold, rigid air get to the inside of their mouth. It can be helpful to wear a scarf over the mouth and nose when running in the winter months.

It is not a good idea to do physical exercises in the rain. Running in the wet climates can often make you sick. Remember, warm feet are a necessity to staying safe when running. If it is wet and snowy outside, it may be impossible to keep dry and safely run.

If going outside during the winter months is not a possibility, you should think about purchasing a treadmill. This will allow a runner to do the workout without having to withstand the coldness of winter. This will also curb the chances of contracting a cold by running in the winter. - 30553
